Cognitive-Behavioral Pain Management

The OIOC approach to pain and disability reflects the belief that work-related musculoskeletal disorders result from the interaction between environmental and individual factors. I Research has clearly established that everyday stress and negative thoughts and moods can contribute to physical pain. Unrelenting pain may, in turn, become a stressor in and of itself. OIOC's Cognitive-Behavioral Pain Management Program helps the individual take responsibility for his or her well being by offering new ways of coping with stress and pain. These techniques help the patient break out of the stress-pain cycle.

The program begins with a Cognitive-Behavioral Evaluation, which is a comprehensive assessment conducted by a licensed psychologist specializing in pain management.  The evaluation includes a medical, psychological, social, work, and psychiatric history.  The evaluation allows the psychologist to identify obstacles to recovery that may not be readily apparent.  After the evaluation the psychologist will discuss an appropriate treatment plan with the patient.

After the evaluation, the Cognitive-Behavioral Pain Management Program may offer:

  • An evaluation of an individual's stress level, symptoms and coping skills at home and work.
  • An educational approach that includes the relationship between stress and pain, ways of monitoring one's stress level and techniques of relaxation, coping and problem solving.
  • Take-home exercises and materials to encourage ongoing participation in stress management techniques.
  • A referral system for individuals who may need additional support to avoid the "chronic pain" trap.
  • The psychologist works closely with the physical therapists and the physician to provide comprehensive care of the highest quality, so that the patient can return to a productive and satisfying life.
When appropriate, the OIOC collaborates with Medical and/or Personnel Department in order to gain information about common stress-related problems within the organization. With this information, the OIOC tailors programs to the specific needs of the individual.
