Dr. Victor H. Frankel is an orthopedic surgeon, a renowned educator and a world-renowned scientist. He has been called "The Father" of modern and applied biomechanics and musculoskeletal ergonomics. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with his Medical Doctor degree in 1951 and he received his Doctor of Philosophy in Biomechanics and Orthopedic Surgery from the University of Uppsala in 1961. Since 1937, Dr. Frankel has received 20 awards for outstanding performance and merit in the fields of biomechanics, orthopaedics and ergonomics with the most prestigious awards being:
1. The American Society for Testing and Materials Award of Merits (1979)
2. The Volvo Award from the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS 1988)
3. The 2000 Lifetime Achievement Award of the New York Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation.

In 1992, Dr. Frankel was awarded The Knight Commander of the Royal Order of the Polar Star (KNO) by Decree of King Carl Gustaf XVI of Sweden for his promotion of Swedish-American research programs and educational studies and for the development of Biomechanics.

Dr. Frankel has served as a board member on more than 25 professional associations including:
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery
The American National Standard Institute
The Food and Drug Administration
The International Standards Institute
The National Research Council
The New York Academy of Medicine
The US Public Health Service Center for Disease Control

Dr. Frankel's lifetime contribution to orthopedic surgery, biomechanics, applied biomechanics and musculoskeletal ergonomics is truly unique.


In 1983, Dr. Frankel with Dr. Margareta Nordin founded the Occupational and Industrial Orthopaedic Center (OIOC), a center to promote musculoskeletal health. The Center has grown to be one of the leading international centers in the study of the causes of occupational low back pain, cumulative trauma disorders, injury prevention and the prevention of disability.

Today, the OIOC includes 11 multidisciplinary faculty and staff members who work in research, clinic, consulting, and educational projects, merging and expanding the boundaries of these disciplines. In addition to forging new frontiers, the OIOC's faculty and staff disseminate the knowledge they have gained through their research and experience so that others may benefit and build upon their accomplishments.

During his 50-year career, Dr. Frankel supervised 17 doctoral theses, and published 12 books and 117 scientific peer reviewed publications. Dr. Frankel is still very active in education and research but has retired from clinical practice.
