With its multidisciplinary team approach, the OIOC conducts clinical, biomechanic, and ergonomic research with the aim of preventing and treating work-related musculoskeletal injuries and disorders, ultimately preventing disability resulting from conditions caused by these ailments.

The research conducted at the OIOC is funded by federal grants, private foundations, unions, physicians and private and public industries.

The knowledge the OIOC has obtained from its research is disseminated through participation in conferences, continuing education programs, industry and commercial lectures, peer-reviewed articles, and a graduate program at New York University. Additionally, through its consulting services the OIOC's multidisciplinary staff applies its knowledge in day-to-day work environments. Most importantly, patients seen at the OIOC received evidence-based treatment.
